Be Kind, Respectful and Support One Another

By | Forge Cares | No Comments

Like we’ve said before, it’s important that we be there for one another during this trying time. Restaurants, bars, and other small businesses took a big hit when they were mandated to close more than a week ago. Many of these restaurants and bars have come up with other ways to support themselves by offering services they’ve never done before such as, take-out and delivery. Just because you can’t eat at your favorite restaurant doesn’t mean you can’t have their food, or drink.  There are some restaurants that have created designated pick up spots, so they can bring your food to you without actually coming into contact with you. Other restaurants are offering restaurant-made meal kits to take home and make yourself, which is also a great activity to pass time. It’s vital that we still do our best to try and support our local restaurants and bars in any way we can. If you’re not comfortable leaving the house to get pick up food, you may also support local business by buying their merchandise or gift cards to use at a later time. If you don’t have the funds to purchase anything from them at this moment, take a moment to share a post on social media encouraging others to do so. It may not seem like much, but it’s still support for those who need it most. It’s the little things that make a big impact in the end.

When we say we’re all in this together, we really are ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. What is affecting your right now in during this time, whether it be stress, anxiety, or fear, could just as likely be affecting someone else as well. That’s why it’s so important that we continue to be supportive, kind, and respectful to one another. This isn’t an easy situation for anyone to go through. Some of us may be still working while others are required to stay home. No matter the situation you are in, please remember to be respectful to everyone around you. Say thank you more than you normally would. Thank the employees at the grocery store stocking shelves to keep up with the demand. Thank your local delivery man, cop, or fireman. It’s as simple as sharing a shout out on social media to all those who are still working. Encourage one another to show a little extra appreciation during this time. Those little acts of appreciation is what keeps them going.

Please continue washing your hands and sanitizing, as this is one of the most effective ways of preventing the spread of the virus.

Free, Fun Educational Tools to Take Advantage of While Stuck at Home

By | Forge Cares | No Comments

Many children are being home schooled at the moment and by now most parents are realizing that being a teacher is a harder job than they had thought. Learning from home creates different challenges that wouldn’t necessarily be a problem while physically in school. Children get distracted and comfortable in their own home, not realizing that education still needs to be a priority during times like these. Though there are challenges to adjust to and overcome, there shouldn’t be a reason your children’s education is halted. Back in the day being able to teach from home would be much trickier, why? Because we didn’t have the advanced technology that we do today. Technology gives you a great opportunity to continue feeding your children knowledge through different ways of learning.

You’ve probably spent a decent amount of time seeking out online resources, apps, games etc. to keep your children’s minds engaged while spending so much time at home. There are several free or discounted online learning resources for pre-K-12 to choose from to keep up on learning. Below is a list of a couple online learning resources that you can take advantage of, as well as a link to an extensive list of education companies offering free subscriptions.

  • Scholastic : Offering a free Learn at Home program which includes 20 days’ worth of curricula.
  • Khan Academy : A free online learning platform that offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and personalized learning dashboard.
  • Outschool : Offering free live online classes for students ages 3 – 18 conducted over video chat.

Does your child love learning about animals? There are multiple zoos and aquariums all over the country doing their best to fill the void of children’s activities with “home safaris,” virtual tours and webcams. Children have the opportunity to watch some of their favorite animals being interacted with by zookeepers while learning some new facts about them.  Below is a list of several zoos and aquariums currently participating in these home safaris.

Many museums are also offering tours that you can enjoy from home. Below is a link to some museums offering these virtual tours.

Need another idea to keep your children, (and maybe you) entertained? Check out the Save With Stories Instagram account. Save With Stories was launched by Jennifer Garner and Amy Adams. It raises money for the organizations Save the Children and No Kid Hungry. The account itself has multiple videos of celebrities reading children’s books aloud to entertain, educate and distract kids and parents who are  practicing social distancing. Who doesn’t love watching videos of their favorite celebrities?

During this time, remember to be supportive, kind, and respectful to one another. You have no idea how stressed someone may be, or what they may be going through personally.

The Importance of Being There for One Another

By | Forge Cares | No Comments

It’s times like these when we need to stick together. Though it may not be the easiest thing to do, considering the social distancing regulation, there are still many ways we can be there for one another during this time.

Stay connected with friends, family, and neighbors through technology. Worried about your elderly neighbor, but can’t go over to check on them? Give them a call, or message them on social media. Check in on family you haven’t heard from lately and friends who may be located somewhere else. There will be many of us staying home that might need help with supplies and company. Do your part in helping those in need of supplies by offering some of yours, and if someone just needs to talk? Offer a listening ear. It’s little things like this that make the biggest difference.

Reach out to friends and family to see if they need someone to watch their children, or to see if they are able to watch yours. Schools being closed creates a new challenge for working parents who need proper child care during the day while they work. Your best resources are the ones you know and are familiar with; friends, and family. It doesn’t hurt to ask them for help. You can also offer your services back to them as well.

There are a number of schools, businesses, churches, food pantries, and mutual aid networks that are offering food assistance for people facing nutritional challenges during this time. We want to encourage you to stay connected and in contact with your local organizations to get information about possible food assistance.

Remember to be supportive, kind, and respectful to one another. You have no idea how stressed someone may be, or what they may be going through personally.

Forge Cares supports Grand Rapids shelter for abused women

By | Forge Cares | No Comments

Through the Forge Cares program, staffers at Forge Industrial Staffing work with a number of charitable activities in Indiana and Michigan.

In western Michigan, the Forge Cares team works with “Run in the Name of Love,” which raises awareness regarding domestic abuse. In Grand Rapids, the run raises money for Safe Haven Ministries.

Safe Haven, founded in 1990, provides residential and non-residential services to abused women and their families. Safe Haven Ministries helps women heal by empowering them and supporting them. It is recognized for its ability to help women draw on their faith to help them during the healing process.

One in three women, approximately 36 million, have been slapped, pushed or otherwise hurt in some way by an intimate partner at least once during their lives. Over 15 million children in the United States live in a household where partner violence occurred at least once within the past year. The number of children living in households where severe partner violence occurs is approximately 7 million.

Safe Haven Ministries helps women and children in abusive situations realize that they are not the only ones with that problem.

Types of Services

Safe Haven’s emergency shelter, Ramoth House, is fully confidential and provides case management and support for women and children while they are staying there. Non-residential services include case management, support groups, and a trauma intervention program. Some of these support groups and other programs are for the women, while some are for their children. A confidential, 24-hour hotline is available.

In addition, Safe Haven provides training to employers, schools, faith communities and other organizations to educate people in abuse prevention. An organization wanting to request such training can visit their website, where they will find a link taking them to information about how they can request training.

Care Packages for Troops Among ‘Forge Cares’ Projects

By | Forge Cares | No Comments

The next time you think that you had a rough day at work, think for a moment about the days experienced by U.S. military troops serving in harm’s way overseas.

As part of its Forge Cares program, Forge Industrial Staffing participates in programs that send care packages to U.S. troops. There are many ways to send troop care packages, from assembling and sending them yourself to contributing to agencies that collect care package goodies and box them up for delivery.

How to Donate

For information on how to put together and send a package yourself, it’s best to get instructions at one of several websites — Any Soldier, which provides names and mailing addresses; OurMilitary.mil; or AdoptAPlatoon.org.

At Operation Gratitude, when you send a donation they send a package. Another organization, Troop Care Pack, sends pre-packed items to soldiers.

What to Include in a Care Package

There are a lot of things that can go into a care package. Extra clothing is certainly helpful.

Food is another good thing to send, so pack something non-perishable such as beef jerky, trail mix and other snacks. The food on base tends to be very bland, so any snacks are appreciated. Food items that they can’t get overseas are a nice touch, as are flavor packets for water, because they have to drink a lot of water out in the field that was not necessarily kept cold. Make sure that any food sent is non-perishable, and packed separately from any toiletries. Soap and food don’t mix.

Lip balm, body wash, foot powder and pain-relieving topical cream are practically luxury items to deployed troops. Lens cleaning cloths or glass cleaner can be used to clean their goggles while out in a sandy area.

Anything practical certainly reduces the stress troops face. But even though they do not have much room for clutter, some other items are great, as well. Troops have been known to appreciate video games, board games, books, movies and music.
