Job Fair Preparation Tips

October 8, 2019

Did you know that each of our Forge Industrial Staffing locations participate in multiple job fairs a month? Job fairs are a great tool for us to use when assisting our clients in filling their staffing needs, and it’s a great way for those seeking employment to get information about various job opportunities. Since there are so many people that visit these job fairs, it’s more than likely that there will be people interested in the same opening as you. At an event like this, it’s important that you stand out from the crowd. Forge has come up with some tips below that should help get you noticed for all the right reasons.

Dress Appropriately

While the advice to dress for success is an old saying, it couldn’t be more appropriate for an event like a job fair. You only get one chance to make a first impression on someone and that someone could potentially be your next employer. It’s important that you dress appropriately. The best thing to keep in mind is to dress as if you were going in for an interview. Be sure to choose clothing that is simple, conservative and appropriate for the job you want.

Polish Your Resume

When visiting a job fair, it’s important that you bring multiple resumes with you, so that you can leave one with each company or staffing agency you talk too. By doing this, you’re reassured knowing that they physically have something of yours that they can remember you by. Before visiting the job fair you’re going to want to polish up your resume. Make sure it’s up-to-date with your skills, and experience listed from most recent to least recent. All experience is good experience, so it’s important that you include any and every job opportunity that you’ve had.

Conduct Yourself Professionally

Once you have the opportunity to speak with someone, be sure to be polite and discuss ways you feel your experience can benefit them. If you’ve done research beforehand about a specific position you’re looking into, or a company you want to work for, make sure you use that knowledge to provide specific examples of the ways you feel you will be an asset. Learn more about how the hiring process with the company works to be sure you’re as prepared as possible.

Confidence is Key

It’s important to be confident when visiting a job fair. This is not an event that you want to display any shyness. Approach each person you meet with a firm handshake and direct eye contact. Introduce yourself with a well-rehearsed pitch that quickly sells you as a potential employee and be sure to address the company representative with respect at all times.

Follow Up

During your time at the job fair, you’ll want to be sure to get the phone number of the companies or staffing agency you’re interested in and spoken with, so that you can follow up with them a few days after the event. You’re probably going to get a decent amount of information about application process, so make sure to take notes, or get a pamphlet if they have one as well.

Follow these Forge tips and an agency, such as ourselves, is sure to decide you’re the right one to fill their staffing needs. The right employment opportunity may be waiting for you at a job fair in your area.
