How Much Screen Time Is Too Much?

By | Tips for Employers, Tips for Job Seekers | No Comments

Espanol

Hello!

During the month of June, we want to focus on the Effects of Screen Time and Your Eyes.

Is Screen Time Really Bad for Our Eyes?

You may not endure a lot of screen time while on the job but do you take in a lot after hours?

Screen time

Effects of Too Much Screen Time

Spending too many hours staring at a screen can cause eye strain. You tend to blink less while staring at the blue light from a screen, and the movement of the screen makes your eyes work harder to focus. We typically do not position the screen at an ideal distance or angle, which can cause added strain. All these issues add up and can lead to lasting effects on your vision.

What your eyes focus on after-hours can influence how they perform on the job.

Potential effects of screen time, include:

  • Eye fatigue – Your eyes can get tired from intense use causing double vision, headaches, and concentration difficulties.
  • Dry and irritated eyes – You tend to blink less when staring at a screen and your eyes can become dry and irritated. You should avoid dry eye because it can impact the health of your eye and cause blurry vision.
  • Loss of focus flexibility – Typically, loss of focus flexibility happens as we age, but excessive screen time can impact our ability to adjust our eyes to see at all distances quickly.
  • Nearsightedness – Screen time can keep our kids indoors, which can have a long-term impact on eye health. In children, natural daylight is important to developing eyes. Studies have shown children who spend more time indoors are more likely to develop nearsightedness.
  • Retinal damage – Digital devices release blue light, which can reach the inner lining of the back of your eye (retina). Studies show that blue light can damage light-sensitive cells in the retina. This can lead to early age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to loss of eyesight. According to the American Optometric Association, children are more likely than adults to experience when exposed to this high-energy light.

In addition, too much screen time can have a major impact on your sleep. Research shows that the blue light alters the brain’s sleep rhythms when used close to bedtime. The brain thinks the screen light is daylight, and it can shift the body’s sleep rhythm.

Tips to Protect Your Eyes from Too Much Screen Time

There are easy steps you can take to reduce your risk of eye strain or damage, including:

  • Adjust lighting – Most screens have a brightness adjustment. Make sure that your screen isn’t brighter than the surrounding light, or your eyes will have to work harder to see. Adjust your room lighting or your screen lighting and increase the contrast on your screen to reduce eye strain.
  • Give your eyes a break – The American Ophthalmological Society recommends using the 20-20-20 rule to reduce eye strain. Take a break every 20 minutes by looking at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This gives your eyes a break and allows them to refocus.
  • Keep eyes moist – Consider using artificial tears to lubricate your eyes when they feel dry. Not only can screen time dry your eyes out, but the heaters and air conditioners in your space can further dry your eyes out.
  • Keep your distance – Keep your screen about an arm’s length or 25 inches away from your eyes – your eyes work harder when the screen is close to your face. Also, the angle of the screen should have you looking slightly downward.
  • Reduce glare – It is important that you position the screen so that you do not produce a glare from sunlight or internal light. A glare can further aggravate the eye.
  • Use blue light filters – A blue light filter can decrease the amount of blue light displayed on your screen. By reducing this light, your eyes won’t feel as tired by the end of the day.
  • Yearly eye exam – Get a yearly eye exam so your physician can check your eye health and determine if any chronic eye conditions are developing.

¿Cuánto tiempo de pantalla es demasiado?

By | Tips for Employers, Tips for Job Seekers | No Comments

¡Hola!

How job seekers find work with a staffing agency

By | Tips for Job Seekers | No Comments

Have you found yourself overwhelmed with the job search process? If you’re finding that you’re applying to dozens of jobs without success, maybe you should consider expanding your search. While many companies post their job listings online there are others who do not post their open positions. Instead, these companies choose to have a staffing agency fill their open positions. Using a staffing agency is often quicker and prevents the company from having to go through the pre-screening and hiring process.

Specialized staffing agencies like Forge Industrial Staffing get to know the personality and skillset of each job seeker they work with. By understanding who you are and matching you with the agencies’ vast database of companies and listings, we can often place a new hire in far less time than traditional methods.

We can assist job seekers in a number of different situations.

Temporary or contract work

Often when a company chooses to use us for hiring, they opt to bring in the employee on a temporary basis. This allows the employee and employer to determine if it’s a good match. The company may then decide to offer the employee a permanent position if they feel the employee is a good fit.

With contracted work, a company will bring in employees for a set amount of time, or month-to-month. These types of positions typically do not evolve into permanent positions.

Direct placement

In many cases, companies will build a relationship with us to recruit top talent when it becomes available. Often referred to as a “headhunter,” we seek out well-qualified talent that we believe will help a company grow.

At Forge Industrial Staffing, we pride ourselves on having the resources of a large-scale staffing agency while having the personal touch of a specialty agency. Our qualified staff will work with you to find the right job, or the right employees for you.

No matter where you are in your job search, whether you’re just starting out or you’re just looking for a better opportunity, Forge Industrial Staffing has hundreds of positions to meet every need. Experience the Forge difference today and see how we are Changing Lives, One Job at a Time.

Advantages of Using a Staffing Agency

By | Tips for Employers | No Comments

The need to fill new employee positions and handle employee turnover is a constant challenge for growing companies. Many companies are finding it more cost effective to use the services of a professional staffing agency instead of an in-house human resources department. It does not matter the type of employees needed; staffing agencies provide a number of important advantages.

Experience

A professional staffing agency has more experience than many human resources departments. The process of hiring employment specialists as well as getting a manager to properly supervise human resources staff takes time, effort and money. A staffing agency is able to compete with the employment specialists in any company. It can provide what is needed at a lower cost.

Network

A staffing agency is only focused on providing the right employee for the desired position. It does no other work. This level of focus enables it to develop and maintain a large network of available workers. Should an employer need seasonal workers, it would need to advertise the positions, interview potential employees, process all of the required documentation for a short employment period. When this same company uses a staffing agency, it will work with an organization that has an established network of workers with proven track records and are looking for short-term employment. An agency will be able to provide the necessary staffing quickly and at a reasonable cost.

Less Risk

When a company uses a professional staffing agency, it will get the workers it needs and not have to pay any human resources overhead. It’s possible for a company to have a person work for it for a period of time before they commit to hiring. During this time, the company has no liability. The staffing agency deals with payroll taxes, workman’s compensation insurance and unemployment claims. If the company doesn’t find the person’s work acceptable, it can easily ask for another candidate.

Cost Effective

A company will be able to get the employees it needs at an affordable cost. It will not need to provide any benefits unless it hires the employee. Many companies use temporary staff to decrease overtime costs paid to their full-time employees. If a company has a busy season each year, a staffing agency will be able to maintain a database of previous employees and prepare to meet any additional staffing needs each year.

Increased Productivity

When regular staff is required to put in overtime for an extended period of time, it can have a negative effect on a company’s staffing levels. It could lead to low morale, decreased motivation and increased employee turnover. Using employees from a staffing agency can help lower the need for overtime and help retain important employees. It can help increase productivity and decrease a company’s downtime.

At Forge Industrial Staffing, we pride ourselves on having the resources of a large-scale staffing agency while having the personal touch of a specialty agency. Our qualified staff will work with you to find the right job, or the right employees for you.
