The elevator pitch: What it is and how to perfect it

By | Tips for Job Seekers | No Comments

The elevator pitch is the simplest form of marketing yourself. It’s your resume, cover letter and interview, all in 20-30 seconds. But how do you prepare an elevator pitch? And when will you ever need one?

Preparing an elevator pitch is much like preparing for a job interview. You are preparing for a situation in which you only have a few minutes to catch the interest and attention of a decision maker; whether it be the CEO of a company you’d like to work for, or perhaps another parent at your child’s soccer game who is well connected.

Your pitch needs to be concise while also showing your audience that you are qualified, well-spoken and of course, qualified for the position.

Start by shaping your elevator pitch on paper:

  • Introduce yourself and your current position and company.
  • Explain the position that you are interested in.
  • Focus on the audiences needs. What can you do for them?
  • Speak in easy-to-understand terms. Just because someone is the CEO of a technology company, doesn’t mean they know anything about computer programming.
  • Read your pitch back to yourself to make sure it doesn’t sound like you’re reading a script.
  • Practice! Use a mirror, record your voice or practice in front of a friend or family member.
  • Prepare yourself for varying situations. What if you meet the CEO? What if you meet the human resources director?

Remember to be yourself. All of the planning and advice in the world will only get you so far. It ultimately boils down to the impression you leave with your audience. Be confident, look the person in the eye and deliver your message with a welcoming smile.

3 Excuses every job hunter needs to forget

By | Tips for Job Seekers | No Comments

For job hunters that have been seeking employment for an extended period of time, it can be easy to slip into bad habits and a negative mindset. Too much time spent hearing horror stories from other job hunters can only hamper your progress. Eventually, you may find yourself making up, or even believing excuses for why you’re struggling to find work.

Stop this immediately. Unemployment can be a difficult time, but showing that you are able to persevere will only make you a stronger candidate when you find employment.

Here are 3 commonly heard excuses that every job hunter needs to forget.

1) Nobody is even seeing my resume.

A lot has changed in the job application and hiring process. Technology has allowed human resources departments to find qualified candidates more efficiently. Instead of just sending your resume into the abyss, find new ways to put yourself out there. Create an online profile on the networking website LinkedIn. According to a Jobvite survey in 2012, 93 percent of recruiters use LinkedIn to find candidates. Rather than using excuses for why employers aren’t finding you, make yourself more visible to them.

2) I can’t afford a pay decrease or a step backward.

Many job seekers are looking for their next perfect fit or “dream job.” Timing is important while you are unemployed. Typically, it is more difficult for job seekers to find work the longer they’ve been unemployed. Instead of holding out for what you believe to be the perfect job, find a relevant position that can be leveraged into a better fit down the road. Seek opportunities to improve other skills that will make you more desirable for the position you ultimately want to have.

If your previous position was eliminated, it may be that companies are looking to cut costs in that area and that that pay scale may no longer exist. Identify ways to trim your budget and what you need to make to cover your essential expenses.

3) The economy.

This is perhaps the easiest out. Anyone who has spent any time online searching for jobs will see there are thousands and thousands of available positions. What many may not realize is that the landscape may have changed. Since 2008, companies have tightened their belts, found more efficient ways to cut costs and with the economy improving, those that successfully made it through the hard times are looking to hire again. Identify your skills and how they can be applied to these new positions and perhaps new industries.

Remember, if you were a leader, manager or well-respected employee at your previous company, it’s likely because you had passion, drive and a willingness to help the company succeed. Those traits are key to the success of any job seeker and are what will continue to make you a desirable candidate and a successful employee.

At Forge Industrial Staffing, we pride ourselves on having the resources of a large-scale staffing agency while having the personal touch of a specialty agency. Our qualified staff will work with you to find the right job, or the right employees for you.

What does skill marketing mean?

By | Tips for Job Seekers | No Comments

Perhaps you’ve been out of the workforce for an extended period of time, or held the same position for many years and are now finding yourself looking for work. You’ve probably found many new terms that are intended to help you in your journey to find employment. Skill marketing is one of these terms that is well known and widely used throughout the staffing and recruitment industry.

Skill marketing is the act, or art in some cases, of presenting a highly skilled candidate for a position to a potential employer, even if the employer is not openly seeking to hire someone.

A prime example of this type of strategy would be if a recruiter, working on behalf of a job seeker that was an exceptional surgeon, contacted a large hospital and asked for the hospital to meet with the job seeker to determine if there was a place for them within the company.

Quite often, even when a company is not posting a need for a specific position, it will be interested in growing the talent within the company. If hiring you will make it a better company, it is likely you’ll at least get an interview.

A job recruiter or placement agency is a valuable resource when you have the type of skills that can be marketed. They understand the industry, market demand, wages and compensation and companies in your area and having a complete understanding of who you are, can often find you a better position than you could do alone. However, it is important for job seekers to be able to skill market themselves to recruiters. By thoroughly explaining your skills, experience and job history can give a recruiter an accurate idea of who you are making it easier for that person to find you job opportunities.

At Forge Industrial Staffing, we pride ourselves on having the resources of a large-scale staffing agency while having the personal touch of a specialty agency. Our qualified staff will work with you to find the right job, or the right employees for you.

Staying positive will help you find a job faster

By | Tips for Job Seekers | No Comments

It is important to realize that everyone understands it is not easy to be unemployed or underemployed. The longer one spends searching for a new job, the more difficult it can be to keep their chin up and stay positive. However, job recruiters and HR departments will agree, that a positive attitude can help outweigh gaps or shortcomings on a resume.

While it may seem like common sense that staying positive will help you find a job faster, what is it about a positive attitude that makes it harder for employers to pass you by?

A positive attitude shows you are resilient.

Your resume shows who you are behind the scenes and what you’ve done in the past. Your attitude during phone calls, meetings and interviews with a prospective employer show who you are now. If you have a gap on your resume, a positive attitude can show an employer that you don’t let challenges bring you down and that you work hard to overcome them.

A positive attitude shows that you’re focused on the future.

A successful company knows that you learn from the past to improve for the future. A company worth working for will see that you do not dwell on the past, but instead have learned from your experiences and are improving as an individual.

A positive attitude shows your ability to thrive under pressure.

You may notice during an interview that you are asked something like, “Tell me about a difficult situation you’ve experienced,” “Tell me about an impossible deadline you’ve faced,” or “Tell me about a difficult situation with a co-worker.” When you’re asked these types of questions, the interviewer wants to understand what they may be able to expect from you in similar situations. This can also help determine if you’re appropriate for a leadership role.

Job-Hunting Tip: Clean Up Your Online Presence

By | Tips for Job Seekers | No Comments

You’re on the hunt for a job and find an open position you’d really like to have. You complete your resume, compile your references and send it off to the hiring department. Now, it appears, your future is out of your hands, and you hope you will stand out.

There are a few things you can do to significantly boost your chances of being noticed by the hiring staff.

Make sure you are applying for jobs appropriate for your skill set. Chances are the hiring staff or the computer program used to scan through your resume will immediately reject it if it does not contain specific keywords related to the position.

Review your presence online. A recent survey learned that 14% – 16% of applicants were turned down for a job because of something they posted online or on a social networking site like Facebook or Twitter. It is a good idea to have someone you trust take a look at your online presence to see if photos or comments might be inappropriate. This may also include your email address and outgoing voicemail message. Many people like to leave humorous outgoing messages on their voicemail, or use a personal email address like fundude_123@email.com. However, it would be wise to leave a simple message with your name and a brief message letting the caller know you will call them back shortly. For your email address, a simple address such as YourName@email.com is far more appropriate for potential employers.

Always remember to learn about the company’s culture so that when you receive that phone call you’re prepared to talk about how you can be an important asset to them.

At Forge Industrial Staffing, we pride ourselves on having the resources of a large-scale staffing agency while having the personal touch of a specialty agency. Our qualified staff will work with you to find the right job, or the right employees for you.

How to fill gaps in your resume

By | Tips for Job Seekers | No Comments

For anyone that has been unemployed for six months or longer, you may find that it can become increasingly difficult to find a job. Employers sometimes prefer to hire someone who is currently working or has just recently left another position, with the assumption that this person’s skills are fresh and up-to-date. This unemployment bias can be a frustrating challenge for those seeking work.

There are many ways you can fill those employment gaps in your resume with relevant projects that will not only show that you are energetic and motivated, but that you continued to develop your skills. Here are 3 ways to spend your time, when you aren’t sending out resumes.

Volunteer
While it doesn’t pay the bills, offering your services to a nonprofit organization can pay off in many ways. Most nonprofits have extensive networks of well-connected members of the community. Often times, building these relationships will lead to potential job opportunities. Organizations like community centers, libraries and public services groups are generally well respected, and a reference from an executive director can go a long way.

Seek education or training
Being optimistic during your job hunt is key. Instead of spending your free time waiting for the phone to ring, seek additional training and courses that will make you a more valuable candidate for the jobs you seek. Online courses are great and often free or inexpensive.

Write or speak
If you have valuable skills that you can share with others, get out and share them. Seeking speaking engagements will not only keep your name relevant in your industry and connect you with many like-minded individuals.

At Forge Industrial Staffing, we pride ourselves on having the resources of a large-scale staffing agency while having the personal touch of a specialty agency. Our qualified staff will work with you to find the right job, or the right employees for you.
